Do I Really Need A Lens Filter?
Lens filters expand your photography potential by improving image quality and adding creative effects to your images. Filters also offer the protection you need for expensive glass lenses. There are many different types of filters to suit and match your different needs. Here is a brief overview of some basic and popular lens filters and what they’re for.
Clear/Protection Filters keep the front element of your lens clean and safe. They protect it against minor bumps and scratches and offer no optical effects.
UV/Skylight Filters protect your lens and improve an image quality of both stills and videos. UV filters block atmospheric haze, moisture and other forms of airborne pollutants, which reduce image quality and can be clear or offer a warm amber appearance. Skylight filters protect your lens the same way as UV filters, however, they provide a magenta tint.
Polarizing Filters are designed for outdoor photography and reduce reflections on surfaces like water, ice, and glass. They also provide increased contrast between colors for a beautiful backdrop effect. Circular Polarizing filters are specifically designed for use with autofocus lenses while linear Polarizers are best used with manual-focus lenses.
Neutral Density (ND) Filters absorb calibrated degrees of light that pass through the lens. These grey-toned filters allow shooting at wider f-stops in bright lighting conditions and let you drop your shutter speeds while maintaining full control of how much or how little depth of field you desire.
