Ribbon Microphones

Ribbon microphones are also known as "velocity microphones" because their light, electrically-charged metal ribbon (suspended between two magnetic poles) allows them to measure the velocity of air molecules in a waveform — not just air displacement, as is the case with moving-coil microphones. The light ribbon incorporated in these mics has a much higher natural resonant frequency than diaphragms in other microphone types, offering improved sensitivity to higher frequencies without the harshness sometimes associated with small and large diaphragm condenser mics. This microphone type has recently enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, particularly with musicians and engineers desiring a smoother high frequency response and a bit of that “vintage vibe”.
