Developed in Europe in the early part of the 19th century, the Harmonica (also known as the French Harp or Mouth Organ) quickly gained widespread popularity for use in classical music. In 1857, Matthias Hohner became the first to mass-produce them and by 1868, he began supplying the United States. Harmonica music rapidly became popular, and the country became an enormous market for Hohner's goods. President Abraham Lincoln carried a harmonica in his pocket, as did frontiersmen Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid – and harmonicas provided solace to soldiers on both the Union and Confederate sides of the American Civil War. By the 1920s, the diatonic harmonica had largely reached its modern form.
