Much like Coca-Cola®, Kleenex®, Band-Aid®, and Scotch Tape® — the Fender brand name is practically synonymous with electric guitars and basses. It most definitely was back in the 50’s to early 60’s, as the majority of electric guitars built and sold worldwide were produced by Clarence Leonidas "Leo" Fender’s modest company, founded in 1946 in Fullerton, California. And although electric basses existed beforehand, it wasn’t until October of 1951 when Leo Fender and George Fullerton created the Fender Precision Bass that the concept of a fretted, horizontally-played electric bass guitar really took off.
Indeed, the Fender company has built and sold more electric guitars and basses than any other manufacturer in the world, currently producing an estimated 1,000 guitars a day in more than 100 different colors and finishes. And to this day, theirs are the most copied of all electric guitar, bass, and amplifier designs. A legend? Well, you’d be hard-pressed to find many other musical instrument manufacturers that have credentials this compelling — and products this exciting!
