Bigger, Faster, Slicker… WOW!
Canon has officially unveiled the new EOS R, the company’s first full-frame mirrorless competitor. This top of the line camera boasts many technological advancements as it’s going head on to compete with Nikon’s Z series.
The Canon EOS R features Canon’s brand new RF lens mount, which Canon says is “revolutionary.” The RF mount uses 12 electrical contacts for the fastest-ever communication between the camera bodies and lenses.
So what does that mean?
Well, technically speaking the autofocus system of the camera has a maximum of 5,655 AF points using Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF phase-detection system. The AF works at up to f/11 and features a 384-zone (24×16) real-time metering system. It can function well in low light thanks to its working range of EV -6 to 18 (EV -6 AF sensitivity requires f/1.2 lenses).
The AF system can achieve focus in as little as 0.05 seconds (when using the new RF 24-105mm f/4L IS lens), which is presently the fastest autofocus speed in the world, according to Canon.
One of my favorite new features is the new Multi-Function Bar. Located above the LCD screen and to the right of the EVF is this new feature that Canon seemingly took right out of Apple’s playbook. And let’s be honest, if we are looking for features to enhance a tech-device, Apple is not a bad place to start!
This touch bar allows photographers to quickly access customizable settings — things like autofocus, ISO, and white balance. You can both tap and slide your finger across the bar to access settings and adjust them.
Have you ever heard of a silent shutter?
Well, by using an inaudible electronic shutter instead of the camera's focal-plane shutter, Canon can boast such a feature! For some it seems like a gimmick, but to those shooting wildlife, speeches or in any other situation that may require photographer’s discretion - a silent shutter can go a long way to capturing the shot you want and avoiding the shot everyone else will get.
4K video? Yes, it seems that every camera coming out now has 4K capability. Some of the helpful 4K functions that the Canon EOS R offers includes: distortion correction during recording and Movie Digital IS. Additionally, video can be recorded during still photo shooting by simply pressing the Movie Shooting button. Anyone who is toggling from video to still shots can appreciate how these features can be game changers!
Here’s a closer look at the EOS R and its features:
Canon has really taken the next step with the EOS R to create a tool designed for the purpose of on creating high image quality while still focused on ease of use. A new age of photography is upon us and these new cameras based on mirrorless technology seem to be lighting the way!
